High One
One day Mommy was on the phone. I was in charge of my little sister, Annie. I loved my little sister very much. What I liked most about her was her smile. She had a very special smile. A gigantic smile. The biggest smile I ever saw. An Annie sized smile. When Annie smiled one of those big smiles, her big brown eyes would open wide and fill up with laughter. Annie only smiled like that when she was very happy. Today she was very sad. I tapped my chin. That meant I was thinking really, really hard. I was trying to think of a way to make Annie smile. To make Annie's eyes big. Big enough for laughter to fit inside. Annie always smiled when I pretended to be different animals. I decided that's what I would do. I started hopping. I made a bunny face. I pretended I was eating carrots. But Annie didn't smile. She didn't even look at me. I guess she thought bunnies were boring. I pretended I was a monkey. I bounced up and down. I swung my arms in front me.
"Annie, look!" I shouted. "I'm a monkey!"
But Annie didn't smile. She didn't even look at me. Monkey's were boring, too. I needed to do something new. I tapped my chin again. I had to think harder. Much harder.
Was there a game we never played before? I wondered. Yes! I thought. It was the perfect game. The game that was sure to make Annie smile!
"High five," I said, holding up my hand.
Annie held up one finger. I sighed. Annie didn't understand the game. If she didn't understand the game then she wouldn't smile. If she didn't smile then her big brown eyes wouldn't get any bigger. They certainly wouldn't get big enough for any laughter. Annie was still sad and now so was I.
"I five," Annie whispered, holding up one finger.
This time I was the one who didn't smile. I didn't even look at Annie.
"I five!" Annie shouted, holding up her finger. With her other hand Annie grabbed onto my finger. One finger. I smiled a gigantic, Annie sized smile. I had a gigantic idea. I had the perfect idea. The idea that was sure to make Annie smile!
"High one," I said, holding up one finger.
"I one," Annie repeated, holding up her finger.
I tapped Annie's finger with mine. There was a gigantic, Annie sized smile on her face. Her eyes were big. Big enough for laughter to fit inside.
Annie was happy and now so was I. I was happy because I made my little sister smile. A very special smile.
"I one!" Annie shrieked, holding up her finger.
I tapped Annie's finger.
Annie giggled and held up her finger again. Can you guess what she said next?
